We feature a fair amount of “S” versions of Audis, but there are some great options if you’re not looking for the flash or repair bills of the bigger brother models. In some cases, I really think these models will be collectable or at very least sought after in the future. They’re also a stark reminder of what we’ve lost in the past decade, because in their own way each of these cars has been discontinued in the United States by Audi. Today we’ll look at the last of the manual A6s, a C5 2.7T A6 Quattro 6 speed and a reminder to when Audi imported small wagons with a B5 1.8T Quattro Avant 5 speed. They’re also stellar deals below $6,000. Let’s start with the 6 speed sedan:

  1. Apr 18, 2016  Overall, the 2000 Audi A6 Quattro 2.7T is a vehicle ahead of its time. Classic, sleek design exterior complements an elegant interior decorated with all leather seats, bucket front seats, fine trims, dual temperature for driver and passenger, powerful audio system, 6 cylinder twin turbo engine, to name a few or its long list of features.
  2. Perfect for someone that wants to have a manual transmission, all wheel drive, twin turbo beast! Our plan was to swap the 6 speed manual gearbox in a 2003 Audi RS6 but plans changed and we are selling this vehicle to a new home. Strong engine and transmission. Very clean for age and mileage. Lots of life and potential left in this wonderful A6.
  3. 2000 Audi A6 Quattro Transmission Assembly (Not Actual Picture) Notes: Some vehicles come with several transmission choices and could be very confusing. Please make sure to read the transmission description below and in particular match the engine size, fitting notes and number of speed (when applicable) with your vehicle's specifications.

2000 AUDI A6 QUATTRO! 2.7T, AWD, 6 SPEED, MANUAL, SPORT, MUST SEE!

This car strikes me as a great deal and fairly undervalued. At $5,000, this is a lot of car, effectively a S4 in a more dignified suit. The 6 speed manual A6s are a joy to drive and really the last of the breed, as the manual option was completely discontinued in the U.S. after this model. With nearly 130,000 miles I’d expect some repairs in the future, but even given a healthy repair budget this car still is a lot of value for the money. $5,000 would get you into an S4, but that car would likely have close to 200,000 or more miles and throws a very different vibe than the A6. As I said in previous posts, this car is really the spiritual successor to the much-loved C4 S4/S6 and deserves more respect than the market gives it. Looking for something a little smaller and more versatile? How about a B5 A4 wagon?

The B5 saw the introduction to U.S. shores of the small Audi wagon; a decade on, Audi has decided that all roads lead to Allroads and has removed this option from our pallet. That’s a shame, because for a while the A4 really cornered the small sporty wagon category. Equipped with the V6 these were sedate and luxury-oriented tourers, but with the 1.8T and manual, the A4 felt small and drove more like a GTi. If anything, the weight of the Avant over the rear wheels really helps out balancing some of the understeer inherently dialed into the Audi platform:

2000 AUDI A4 1.8T AVANT TURBO WAGON QUATTRO B5 5SPEED NAVIGATION KW COILOVER APR

With some modifications to this already-Sport package equipped wagon, this is a desirable package. The APR goodies will up the power and make this car more fun, the KW coilovers are great in the twisties, and while black isn’t the option that I’d choose this car certainly looks great. I love the Speedline-option wheels for the sport package; as one of our readers noted they suit the design very well and look great while not standing out too much. Unfortunately this dealer hasn’t provided many photos of this car, but it’s priced below most of the market for similar mile A4 Avants, and like the A6 even factoring in some maintenance this appears to be a solid package for a daily driver with some spirit.

Honestly, I’d have a hard time choosing between these two; I love the A6’s combination of speed and style but the C5 chassis is not my favorite looker. On the other hand, I think the B5 A4 was better looking than the B6 that replaced it, but I’d really like to see more photos of this Avant before putting a bid on it. At these prices, though, either one seems like a good package and lots of fun. Which would you choose?

(Matt Hagin tested the original Audi Quattro back in '84 and was suitably impressed with its all-weather roadability. Bob Hagin still marvels at Audi's early use of a five-cylinder engine to powered it.)

6 Speed Manual Transmission Cars

BOB - Matt, that first Quattro we had was really fast and almost as impressive was its ability to stick to the pavement. It was the first mass-produced, all-wheel drive passenger car in the U.S. And this newest version of the updated Quattro is even more unique. The Quattro system in the 2000 A6 2.7T is the company's fourth generation all-wheel-drive system and while the driving of all four wheels is now available in amultitude of cars being sold in this country, it still isn't commonplace. The Audi system uses front and rear locking differentials to apply power to the wheels with the most traction, while pulling it away from the wheels with less 'bite.' In addition to those 'lockers' on the front and rear drive axles, there's a limited-slip centerdifferential to control power running from front to rear.

MATT - The V6 engine in our test car is designed around cylinder heads that each have dual overhead cams, three intake valves and two exhaust valves for each cylinder and a variable camshaft timing system that provides good torque at relatively low engine RPM. It's fitted with a pair of small turbochargers which spool up quickly to allow it to jump from zero to 60 in just over six seconds. The engine is an adaptation of Audi's 2.8 liter naturally-aspirated, non-turboed V6 found in the more docile A6 models. Audi engineers dropped the displacement a bit because additional internal cooling was needed. They did this by thickening up the cylinder walls, thus decreasing its displacement. Those turbos jump the power of the 2.7T to 250 horses from the 200 found in the standard 2.8 liter version. And the difference is very noticeable.

BOB - Being a devoted stick-shift fan, I was happy to see that our test car' had a slick six-speed manual transmission. It's really adelight to use and the company even went so far as to put a syncromesh system on the reverse gear. This makes it easier to slip the tranny into reverse. There's also a five-speed automatic transmission available onthe car and it's equipped with what Audi calls its Tiptronic gear selection system. With Tiptronic, the driver can use the transmission like a 'normal' automatic, or shift it up and down almost like a stick-shift when the gear shift handle is moved into a special slot.

2000 Audi A6 Quattro Transmission

MATT - This car has all the upscale items you like to see in a classy road car. Things like standard four-wheel disc brakes with an anti-lock brake system are standard. The car feels solidly planted on the road, and an optional Sport Package on our test car helped in that area but it carries a pretty stiff price tag of $750. The package includes tighter, more form-fitting front seats and better handling tires with fancy alloy rims. Of course our tester came with the works which included Xenon high discharge headlights, a Bose stereo system with a trunk-mounted six disc changer and a very handy navigation system that helps drivers avoid getting lost. But using the navigation system requires a little boning-up with the instruction manual before thedriver can get it down pat.

2000 Audi A6 Quattro Problems

BOB - Our car had some other handy items, too. Side window curtain- type air bags protect front and rear occupants and could be a life-saver. Optional warm and cold weather packages make the driving experience more comfortable. The warm weather package includes asolar-sensitive sunroof that engages the ventilation system to cool the interior when it's sitting in the hot sun. It also has side window shades and a powered shade on the back window. I would have liked to try the acoustic parking system but I didn't get the chance. This device has sensors in the rear bumper to monitor how close you are to things that are behind the car. This car has more money invested in fancy options hen I paid for the vehicle that I drive every day.

2005 Audi A6 Quattro Manual

MATT - Dad, that's obvious and someday Mom's going to make you sell off all your 'rolling-wounded' vehicles and settle for something that was at least built in the last decade.
